Sudbury Conservatives Acclaim New Candidate Fred Slade
August 15, 2009
GREATER SUDBURY – Fred Slade, a local Chartered Accountant and dedicated community volunteer, has been acclaimed by the Sudbury Conservative Electoral District Association as their candidate for the next federal election in Sudbury. A hard-working advocate for the community, Fred brings a track record of sincerity, persistence, innovative thinking and positive results in his bid to represent Sudbury at the federal level.

Fred says, “I am both honoured and excited to be the Conservative Party of Canada Candidate for Sudbury in the next federal election. My experience in dealing with the people of Sudbury in both my work and through my community endeavours has helped to prepare me for this challenge."

Since Prime Minister Harper's Conservative Government was first elected in 2006, we have seen many positive changes in Canada and here in Sudbury as well. In this year alone, Stephen Harper's Government is improving our quality of life by:

• Expanding and accelerating the recent historic federal investment in infrastructure with almost $12 billion in new infrastructure stimulus funding. Sudbury has benefitted from this with three major road projects now under development.

• Providing $7.8 billion to build quality housing, stimulate construction and enhance energy efficiency. Greater Sudbury has recently started construction on a new affordable housing unit for seniors with $827,280 from the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program. There are also many families in Sudbury who are taking advantage of the $1,350.00 Federal Home Renovation Tax Credit to renovate their homes and make them more energy efficient;

• Investing $128 million in four-laning a further nine kilometers of Highway 69 in partnership with the Ontario Government;

• Granting $1.62 million for a variety of economic development initiatives that include funding for Downtown Village Corporation, FedNor Youth Internships, the Sudbury Neutrino Lab and other projects;

• Providing almost $1 million for a aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicle for Greater Sudbury Airport;

• Providing $5 million for the Living with Lakes Centre which will enable construction to begin;

• Providing funding to improve recreational facilities including Howard Armstrong Recreation Centre, Jim Jerome SportsComplex, and Grace Hartman Amphitheatre.

In addition Stephen Harper's Government has implemented numerous tax cuts to help families throughout Canada including cutting the GST to 5%, creating a Universal Child Care Benefit that provides families with up to $1,200 per year per child; increasing the basic personal exemption amount by over $1,000; providing up to $500.00 in refundable tax credits for families with children in sports or arts programs; introducing a text book credit for post-secondary students; introducing an Apprenticeship Incentive Grant to help new apprentices, income splitting for seniors and a multitude of other benefits and tax savings.

"Sudbury needs and deserves better representation than it has been receiving in recent years.” says Fred. Under the long time Liberal representation in Ottawa and in Sudbury, the North was taken for granted and the quality of service to our community disintegrated. Although our current MP has brought some effort and energy to the position, the NDP as a fourth place party in Canada, is in no position to provide Sudbury with the representation we deserve."

"I share the values and experiences of fellow Northerners, parents, volunteers and working Canadians and have 35 years of real world experience working with local business people, employees, seniors and students. I look forward to working with my committed team and am looking forward to meeting as many people in this riding as I possibly can. I want to give the people of Sudbury every opportunity to see and hear from me as I seek to be their representative in Ottawa.”
